Flamingos

Scientists discover how flamingos stand on one leg. Professor Young-Hui Chang said a flamingo could stand with just one foot for hours because of its skeleton. The hips and feet of flamingos are in special shapes and positions that provide an amazing balance in birds. Another researcher, Lena Ting, said it would be very difficult for humans to remain silent without moving, even for an hour. The muscles in our body keep changing to keep us up and stop us from falling. The bone position on the flamingo means the bird does not need to use so many muscles to keep silent. This means they save energy. Researchers say that energy savings can also be the reason other birds stand and sleep on one leg.
