THE END OF THE AFFAIR
– Graham Greene
The End Of The Affair is the story of a novel writer who had a
love affair with the wife of a civil servant who held a high enough post during
the second world war in London. Bendrix, a less successful writer, wanted to
write a novel about the life of civil servants, so he interviewed Sarah, who
later became a love affair. This relationship eventually broke up because Sarah
suddenly did not want to see her again after an event occurred.
The novel is written from the side of Bendrix, the jealous novel writer, first to Sarah's husband, then to God. Not only the ordinary love story, there are reflections on marriage, belief in God, an atheist's spirit, and the soul of a woman split between love for a lover, a husband, and a sinful feeling to God.
Reading this book does give the impression that the author is a religious person, who believes that everyone will have a sinful feeling when doing things that are forbidden, and in times of crisis will surely return to God - here is the Catholic religion - and that God will grant earnest prayer, including miracles. But this may be too difficult for an atheist, because life does not always give the good things we want or want. The tension between the two above is illustrated in Sarah and Bendrix's character, while Henry is portrayed as a resigned, but not religious person.
This novel seems to represent the authors' view that human life can only mean by having faith in God, even though the struggle to believe is severe.
