BLEAK HOUSE – Charles Dickens
Bleak House is a work of Dickens which is a social
critique of life in London in the mid-19th century. Taking the time setting in
1852, Dickens highlighted the wretchedness of civil law systems in Britain at
that time, specifically about inheritance. Once there is a case about
inheritance rights that have been held for many years, even several generations
have died and been born during the case. This case is known by the name of
Jarndyce and Jarndyce (the case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce). It is said that the
case depletes all the energy, time, and intelligence of lawyers at High Court
of Chancery, London, and the young and hopeful heirs claimant, gradually aged
and ruined his life pending the settlement of the Jarndyce case and Jarndyce.
This case has made the fate of many people so miserable.
Bleak House is a complex and lengthy novel, a British social portrait of the Victorian era. Although some sources say that Bleak House is Dickens's best novel, maybe this novel is not very enjoyable, especially for Indonesian readers, because it tends to be long and boring.
