Prophylactic percutaneous dilatational cricothyrotomy, prior to surgical tracheostomy: case report.
Airway
management includes set of maneuvers and medical procedure perform to prevent
and relieve airway obstruction. This ensures an open pathway for gas exchange
between a patient's lungs and the atmosphere. Tracheostomy is an operative procedure that creates a surgical airway in
the cervical trachea. It most often performed in patients who have difficulty
weaning off a ventilator, followed by those who have suffered trauma or a
catastrophic neurologic insult.Infectious and neoplastic processes are less common
in diseases that require a surgical airway. Percutaneous dilational cricothyrotomy is a quick procedure and
can become avaluable tool in securing the airway in cases of critical
supraglottic obstruction in patientswho will be taken to surgery and carry a
risk of loss of permeability of the airway.
