Prophylactic percutaneous dilatational cricothyrotomy, prior to surgical tracheostomy: case report.

Airway management includes set of maneuvers and medical procedure perform to prevent and relieve airway obstruction. This ensures an open pathway for gas exchange between a patient's lungs and the atmosphere. Tracheostomy is an operative procedure that creates a surgical airway in the cervical trachea.It most often performed in patients who have difficulty weaning off a ventilator, followed by those who have suffered trauma or a catastrophic neurologic insult.Infectious and neoplastic processes are less common in diseases that require a surgical airway. Percutaneous dilational cricothyrotomy is a quick procedure and can become avaluable tool in securing the airway in cases of critical supraglottic obstruction in patientswho will be taken to surgery and carry a risk of loss of permeability of the airway.
