An evaluation of the Writing Assessment
Measure (WAM) for children’s narrative writing
The study evaluated the reliability and validity of the Writing
Assessment Measure (WAM), developed to reflect the skills which
children of different abilities are expected to achieve in written
expression, as part ofthe National Curriculum guidelines in England
and Wales.Diez, 1974).
This study overall has contributed to the field by developing and evaluating a writing mea￾sure that has potential utility to the professionals assessing children’s writing.

This study could be further developed by evaluating the WAM on a larger, more diverse sample.
Further consideration also needs to be given to the element ‘Ideas’ in relation to inter-rater agreement
andits relationship withthe overall score.
