INTRODUCING ENGLISH LINGUISTICS - Charles F. Meyer
The title of this book is “Introducing English
Linguistics“ written by Charles F. Meyer.
In this book, there are seven chapters and 259
pages.
1. The
Study of Language.
The first chapter tells about
introduction about Linguistics, especially about language .
-
Introduction : tells about the contents
of the book, and it explains about what is language.
-
Language as part of a semiotic system : language for a semiotician is a semiotic system, not for
everyone. But then again, for a semiotician everything that is a system is a
semiotic system, including language.
-
The modes of language
-
Studying linguistics
structure : about how to make a sentence or paragraph with the correct
structure (grammar). Explains about : 1) phonetics/phonology – the smallest
unit in language, the phoneme. 2) morphology – the smallest unit of meaning in
language. 3) syntax – the largest level of structure is clause. 4) semantics –
meaning of words or sentence.
2. The
development of English
-
This chapter explains about the
development of English language, language changes time by time, typological
classifications of languages, genetic classifications of languages.
3. The
social context of English
-
Explains about the differences of
grammatical and pragmatic, sentence and utterance, speech act theory, the
cooperative principle, politeness, and speaker variables. In this chapter we
will know how to speak to others correctly.
4. The
structure of English texts
-
Explains about unity of structure, unit
of texture, and spoken and written registers.
5. English
Syntax
-
Formal and additional definitions, the
linear and hierarchial structuring of constituents, word classes and phrases.
In
my opinion, this chapter s one the most difficult chapter. We will find some
figure which is confusing.
6. English
wors : Structure and meaning
-
Lexical semantics, deixis, and morpheme.
7. The
sounds of English
-
Speech segments, suprasegmentals.
Personally,
this book is very difficult to be understood, there some (I thinks “so many”)
words and materials that are really confusing.
