Peer review report 1 on : seasonal and annual fluxes of atmospheric nitrogen deposition and riverine nitrogen  export in two adjacent contrasting rivers in central Japan facing the sea of Japan.

Manuscript discusses the Kita and Minami River Basins in Japan that have historically had large amounts of atmo-spheric N deposition. N export rates from the Kita and Minami Rivers to Wakasa Bay in the Sea of Japan were quantified todetermine the influence of atmospheric N deposition on forested watershed and riverine N export. Data collection, chemical analysis, and the approach are sound. However, my concern is over interpretation of the results. for the water-energy nexus - the concept refers to the relationship between the water  used for energy production  including both electricity and sources of fuel such as oil and natural gas , and the energy consumed to extract, purify, deliver, heat/cool, treat and dispose of water (and wastewater) sometimes referred to as the energy intensity (EI). The relationship is not truly a closed loop as the water used for energy production need not be the same water that is processed using that energy, but all forms of energy production require some input of water making the relationship inextricable.
