"Improvement of writing skills during college: A multi-year cross-sectional and longitidinal study of under graduate writing perfomance" examination of persuasive and expository writing samples collected from over 300 students as part of a cross sectional and longitudinal study of undergraduate writing perfomanc, conducted between 2000 and 2008. Longitudinal analysis of the value of writing was received through a newly develop assessment rubric. That there is significant statistical growth in writing perfomance over time. This is held for persuasive and expository writing. Better writing perfomance among women than men, is also better among students majoring in humanities and social sciences than natural sciences and engineering. These findings indicate an increase in writing perfomance that is relied upon during the student's college years. and moreover indicates that such longitudinal changes can be measured effectively. It is expected that more such assessment in higher education will be an important tool for improving student learning.
