Thai means free, so Thailand is where people are free. King Mongkut who is seeking Thailand to become a free country. Unlike other countries fighting against invaders to gain freedom, he instead lives and works with them.
King Mongkut was born in Siam, the old name of Thailand. He was the eldest son of the King and Queen at that time, so he became one of the candidates to become King in his father's place. But he has a half-brother, Jetta who is seventeen years older than him. Jetta also wants to be king, he is very powerful. When he was twenty years old, Mongkut's father died and in the end Jetta was the one who succeeded his father as king. Do not accept that, Mongkut left his family and became Buddhist monk. He went around and learned many things for 27 years. He lives from the food that people give him, he learns how the original people live there. He spoke English and French so he knew how people from different countries lived. He learned many things including language and science. This experience will be very helpful when he became king later.
When Jetta died he took his place as king. He made Siam in different ways, he led the country very well. Previously, King Siam prioritized the culture of his own country but Mongkut was very interested in Western culture so he wanted his people to learn new things from different countries. Although making changes is not easy, but slowly but surely all can go the way Mongkut hopes. Mongkut has 39 wives and 82 children. They live in a very special place, where they are not allowed to go. When he died, the eldest son of Mongkut, Chulalongkorn replaced his father's position with the system that his father had done, which made the modern Thai state still free. At this moment, Chulalongkorn grandson is the King in Thailand.
