All children in New Zealand must attend school between the ages of six and sixteen. Children attend primary school for 8 years or up to the age of about 13, before progressing to secondary schools for a further 5 years, although many students may decide to leave school at 16.
The school year is divided into four terms and classes run from 9am till 3 or 3.30pm. Student classroom ratio is around 1:20. There are also private school in New Zealand. Eventhough like that, all parents are expected to pay for books, uniforms, and extra costs such as sports, etc. Private schools can be very expensive.
