The App That Reminds You You’re Going to Die
by Bianca Bosker, theatlantic.com

It helped me find inner peace.

Five times a day for the past three months, an app called WeCroak has been telling me I’m going to die. It does not mince words. It surprises me at unpredictable intervals, always with the same blunt message: “Don’t forget, you’re going to die.”

Sending these notices is WeCroak’s sole function. They arrive “at random times and at any moment just like death,” according to the app’s website, and are accompanied by a quote meant to encourage “contemplation, conscious breathing or meditation.” Though the quotes are not intended to induce nausea and despair, this is sometimes their effect. I’m eating lunch with my husband one afternoon when WeCroak presents a line from the Zen poet Gary Snyder: “The other side of the ‘sacred’ is the sight of your beloved in the underworld, dripping with maggots.”

The simplicity of WeCroak also begins to charm me. This is not an app on which I can linger. It has no feed, no option to browse previous quotes, no way to procrastinate. (The only button on the app, “About,” repeats what users already know: This is WeCroak, and it sends you five quotes a day.) Bergwall and Thomas contemplated adding other features, such as links to learn more about the quotes’ authors or a sliding scale to decrease the frequency of notifications. But they ultimately nixed everything beyond the basic template in an effort, Thomas told me, to “disengage people as quickly as possible.”

The best board games of 2017
2017 was a great year for tabletop games, and we spent a lot of time playing them. As usual, the board game release schedule is slanted heavily toward the latter months of the year, so we couldn't get absolutely everything we wanted to play to the table. This is doubly true for Eurogames, as the Spiel show in Essen, Germany, came even later in October than usual this year.
That said, we love the list we came up with. Here, in no particular order, are our favorite games of the year. Be sure to let us know your favorites in the comments, and here's to another great year of cardboard, cubes, cards, and miniatures in 2018.

Some people are incredibly likable because of the things they do

If you know someone who possesses the following qualities, share this with them -- and also tell them how much you appreciate the fact they are in your life.

1. They don't blame.
 2. They don't control.

The Truth About Those 'Alien Alloys' in The New York Times' UFO Story

The New York Times published a stunning story Saturday (Dec. 16) revealing that the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) had, between 2007 and 2012, funded a $22 million program for investigating UFOs. The story included three revelations that were tailored to blow readers' minds:

1. Many high-ranking people in the federal government believe aliens have visited planet Earth.

2. Military pilots have recorded videos of UFOs with capabilities that seem to outstrip all known human aircraft, changing direction and accelerating in ways no fighter jet or helicopter could ever accomplish.

3. In a group of buildings in Las Vegas, the government stockpiles alloys and other materials believed to be associated with UFOs.

This Is How Your Life Falls Apart

Most people’s lives don’t derail because of a single moment.

But we imagine that’s how it goes because those are the moments that get sensationalized in movies, books, plays, musicals, music, and pop culture.

It’s very dramatic to see someone living a normal life — and then all of a sudden decide to murder their neighbor, or overdose, or cheat on their spouse, or rob a liquor store, or do something that can cause catastrophic consequences.

However, those are not the majority.

Not by a long shot.

1.Most people’s lives derail in a slow, torturous sort of way.
2.Little things in their lives begin to shift.
3. And then 20 years later, they suddenly wake up feeling an immense amount of regret.
4. That’s a very difficult realization to come to later in life.

The key to long-lasting relationships is more simple than you think
By Mark Manson

Mark Manson, the author of 'The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck," too told us the secret to a long, lasting relationship. And it's simpler than you think. Following is a transcript of the video.

Mark Manson: I think, if you look at a relationship, I actually think it should be as boring as possible. And that sounds really weird to people but if you think about it, a really happy 80-year-old couple that's been together for 60 years, the reason that they've been together for 60 years, it isn't because they took all these private jets and they had these crazy vacations and "Oh my God, look at their pictures."

It's because that they were able to be boring together. They are able to spend year after year, sitting around the house, talking about the same boring stuff, watching TV, watching movies, cooking dinner, and it went fine. There was nothing exciting, there's nothing blowing up, there's no huge drama, and dishes flying.

It's an important thing for people to understand because I think, especially today, a lot of people — we don't want to be a boring person, like we really want to be interesting people and have interesting lives but the problem is that, that conflicts with what makes a relationship good in a lot of cases. A lot of cases, what makes you an interesting and complex person, makes you a really horrible person to be with romantically. In a strange way, I feel like we need to cultivate more boredom in our lives, like boredom needs to be okay again. It needs to be seen as a good thing and I think it's definitely a good thing for relationships.

This Japanese Artist Paints With Microsoft Excel Instead of a Brush

Starting a new hobby usually requires a hefty investment in both time and equipment, but when 77-year-old Tatsuo Horiuchi retired and wanted to take up painting, he passed on the pricey brushes, paint, and canvases, and decided to use an app already installed on his Windows PC: Microsoft Excel.

Relying on the business software’s ability to generate colorful graphs used to illustrate data, Horiuchi wields Excel like Michelangelo did paint and brushes. But until the Sistine Chapel installs a giant LCD display on the ceiling, he may never have the opportunity to truly ‘paint’ a masterpiece.

Influence: The 4-Step Process for Selling Anything to Anyone

Influence is described as "the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something." However as subtle as some forms of influence might seem as they appear in both verbal and non-verbal cues, the ability to have influence over someone, especially in the area of sales, can quite literally transform your business and your finances.

How to Influence People to Buy From You

In a recent conversation with influence and persuasion expert Michael Bernoff, I dug deep into the science and strategies behind the ability to get someone to buy something from you.

4 Steps to Influence Your Prospect

Over the past 15 years, Bernoff has perfected a variety of methods for influence and persuasion that he often teaches around the world. It involves something called micro-commitments. The reasoning? Get people to agree with you on three small details, and the 4th is almost in the proverbial bag.

How powerful is this information? It could quite literally transform your business. There is real power in commitment. For example, when you verbally commit to something, it flips a switch in your mind. You can lucidly envision it. This is incredibly powerful during sales interactions or even things like hashing out contracts and other in-person, real-time negotiations.

It's also the basis for setting goals and building out habits. For goal setting and habits, when you make not just a verbal commitment, but one that's written down on paper, studies indicate that you're far more likely to succeed. With habits, the commitment is invoked when you follow through each time. Every follow-through is one more notch in the commitment belt. String them all together and you can quickly form a good habit or break a bad one
Step 1: Get the prospect to commit to the process.
Step 2: Identify the prospect's problem.
Step 3: Show prospects the solutions.
Step 4: Allow them to pick what's naturally best for them.

Are You Having Trouble Focusing? These Simple Strategies Will Help

Much has been written about how you can better maintain your focus, and mindfulness practice is obviously the foundation of enhancing focus. But in our research, we looked at some new areas that enable you to manage your focus. Here’s how to do it.

Understand Your Daily Focus Pattern
Make sure your most important activities and meetings are planned around the times when your focus is strongest. And that you plan to do more practical and active tasks during the hours where your focus is weaker.
 Know What Influences Your Focus
The most obvious is sleep; if you don’t sleep sufficient your focus and judgment suffers. Also, exercise and the types of food we eat, significantly impacts your ability to stay focused.

You have to believe and feel like you’re already in possession of what you want or else you’ll never get it.

You’ll just desire it and desire and craving are what actually blocks getting what you want.

To desire is to not have which is where the word is rooted.

Babies Who Get More Cuddles Have Their Genetics Changed For Years, Study Shows

The amount of close and comforting contact that young infants get doesn't just keep them warm, snug, and loved. A new study says it can actually affect babies at the molecular level, and the effects can last for years.

Based on the study, babies who get less physical contact and are more distressed at a young age, end up with changes in molecular processes that affect gene expression.

During the study, parents of 94 babies were asked to keep diaries of their touching and cuddling habits from five weeks after birth, as well as logging the behaviour of the infants – sleeping, crying, and so on.

Stop “Thinking” So Much
I know something about you without knowing you. I bet you spend A LOT of time in your head.

You know, thinking, worrying, stressing, freaking out — call it whatever you want. I call it  preoccupied mind.
Well, you can with enough practice. It’s a skill.

In other words: You have the ability to decide what you think. Or, you can choose NOT to think.

And that is one of the most important and most practical things you can learn in life. Before I learned that skill, I would spend hours and hours inside my head.

Has music lost that loving feeling?
This article tells about music has effect in human life.
Over past few months, I have become strangely obsessed with reconnecting to music, listening, curating and most importantly experiencing it, much like I used to about a decade ago. In the years that intervened, like many, I too succumbed to the charms of streaming music…. the sheer ease of accessing music, anytime, anywhere on any device made perfect sense.

Music, movie, food, and book recommendations are supposed to be very human — they mean much more when they come from a friend.

Why apples and oranges should go in the fridge, plus all the other foods you're storing wrong

New guidance has been issued this month advising consumers that apples, oranges and other fruit should be kept in the fridge to prolong shelf life.

** Champagne
Storing champagne and other sparkling wines in the fridge could be altering the taste .
 **Cheese
Wrapping your cheese in clingfilm before storing it in the fridge could be making it go off more quickly.
**Bread
The best way to refresh bread that’s going a little stale is to splash it with water and then heat it for five to 10 minutes in the oven.

** Tomatoes
Tomatoes thrive at room temperature, but become mealy, dry and odourless if refrigerated

 Curiosity Killed the Cravings
So back to my breath. What if instead of fighting our brains or trying to force ourselves to pay attention, we instead tapped into this natural reward based learning process—but added a twist. What if instead we just got really curious about what was happening in our momentary experience.
. In my lab we studied whether mindfulness training could help people quit smoking. Just like trying to force myself to pay attention to my breath, they could try to force themselves to quit smoking.

3 truths every man needs to understand about life

Here are 3 truths every man needs to understand about life sooner than later:

 1. Success is a paradox.
The more you achieve, the more you will want to achieve.

 2. If you cannot find love, it’s because you have not unlocked love within yourself.
Love is a reflection.

When you are “in love,” what you’re really feeling is your own openness.
 3. Showing your “dominance” only ends up revealing weakness.
As you get older as a man, you start to realize that it’s the men who feel the constant need to try to prove themselves that are actually the weakest.

Real Men Understand These 3 Truths About Life

Men need to understand a lot of things.

-If we’re talking about success, men need to understand that success can be defined in an infinite amount of ways.
- If we’re talking about attracting the “ideal partner,” men need to understand that “ideal” is always a reflection of where you’re at in life — and also, what emotional state you’re bringing to the table, yourself.
-If we’re talking historically and philosophically, men need to understand that patterns always repeat themselves, and the best way to predict the future is to study the past.
