"Discovery of ideas in the second language task environment"

   Ideas generation is a cognitive process that is imperative to producing good writing. However, much is not known about the accurence of this process. And how this affected three planning time conditions (planning time, long planning time, and no planning time) and two task conditions (given topics vs. topics and ideas given) to the quality, and the quantity and level of ideas generated in planning notes and essays 52 English as the second language (ESL) of Chinese pre-university students. The results show that there is an explosion of ideas in an essay without planning. The topics and ideas given by the conditions produce a slightly better quality of ideas as well in the essay.
