45th free reading : James Brooke

This story telling about James Brooke was the sultan in Brunei. He was English, he was born in India in 1803 but he was sent to school in England at the age 14. When he was okder he didn't return to India. He bought a ship and went to many part of Asia. When Brooke reached Sarawak, Brunei, the Dayaks were fighting the sultan, Hassim. Hassim wanted to end the war and he told to Brooke that he would give him country of Sarawak if he would help him to stop the fighting. After the war ended the sultan gave Sarawak to Brooke and he became the first English sultan of Sarawak in 1842. Brooke was a very good leader. He learned the Malay language an mixed with his people. The people felt safer and enjoyed a happier. More peacefull life. Brooke built the first school in the country. They sent children to the school so they could make their lives better. In 1863 Brooke returned to England because he was sick. Another his family Charles Brooke became the second English sultan in 1868. Now Sarawak is a part of Malaysia, but the name Brooke is still remembered.
