From news I read about Scientists from NASA want to bring humans to Mars. Researchers are currently trying to find out what plants can grow on the ground on Mars. They hope that astronauts can grow their own food on the Red Planet. The trip to Mars could take two and a half years. The astronauts need to bring plenty of food with them to stay on the way. They used a land made of broken volcanic rock. It contains no nutrients or organic matter, so it is similar to dust on Mars. Scientists plant lettuce in it. The lettuce feels normal, but has weaker roots and takes longer to grow. A NASA spokesman said: "The discovery made in Earth-based 'Earth gardens' will pave the way for future technology research and development in terms of reliable and efficient food production far from Earth
