From news that I read about Fasting Scientists have conducted tests on mice that show fasting can have health benefits. Fasting is eating or drinking little or nothing for a short period of time - 24 hours or sometimes a few days. The tests were conducted at universities in the United States and Italy. The scientists found that fasting in mice can lower the risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Scientists find this makes the pancreas in mice work better. The pancreas is an organ that uses specialized beta cells to produce the hormone insulin. Too much sugar in their blood. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas stops producing insulin. In type 2 diabetes, insufficient insulin is produced or insulin has no effect. Scientists say fasting rats produce an increased amount of insulin. They say their results are promising and tests now need to be done on humans.
