I have found that academic challenges that foster teenage encounters
during their education have been widely reported. The lesser known is
the reason why so few young alumni who want a four-year bachelor's
degree, achieve this goal. For participants in this four-year
longitudinal study, maltreatment, resulting in the placement of foster
care, and exposure to the foster care system, resulted in a history of
trauma and mental health diagnosis. Of those who studied, nearly half
graduated from college, the third came out, and only two remained
enrolled.
And for those who suffer from depression, all participants
also experience anxiety. When considering pursuing a bachelor's degree,
nearly half graduate with a bachelor's degree, about a third drop out of
school, and some participants are still enrolled in the same university
as those who are enrolled as new students. Of those who graduated, a
large number were present at private colleges.
