What I get from the article that drink identity, or the tendency to see myself as a drinker, is a unique predictor of alcohol use and related consequences among young adults; but the mechanisms that cause alcohol problems are poorly understood. Based on self-presentation and self-verification perspective, we examined the relationship between explicit drinking identity and alcohol-related issues among two young adult samples. The research data comes from two large and longitudinal studies. The indirect effect test showed that drinking and alcohol problems were 3 months in both samples. In contrast, a 3 month drinking identity does not mediate the relationship between basic drinking to coping and a 6 month related alcohol problem.
